Question

Bawangal, assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.  Last week, in following your advice to pose and answer questions from within Wisdom, Shaikh Muhaiyaddeen posed the question, taken from the opening Chapter 8 in Guru Mani:

"What is the secret in the fear of God?

Can you explain this and give an answer.

In Chapter 8 itself, in the "Guru Mani", "How the Awe-Inspiring God Subdues Pride", though short, deals on one level with the punishment meted out by God.

You have taught me, however that God does not punish us, and I am uncomfortable with what you say (except the last part where You tell us we live in compassion for all lives) because it holds God out as punishing and tyrannical.

And I do not believe He is.  It feeds into the traditional belief in God which seems to lie at the heart of so much falsehood, hatred, corruption and fanaticism among religious traditions.  Since that's not what You have taught us, it leaves me with the same question I have of the Qur'an, why so much external emphasis on hell and punishment?

Answer

My son, Asma'el Muhaiyaddeen and my son, Shaikh Muhaiyaddeen, and for all of our sons and daughters, assalaamu alaykum.  Meechum anbu, my sons.

Now, to begin with, to the world Allah appears to be punishing because He does not accept what is illusion, Reality cannot accept illusion and Truth cannot accept falsehood and Purity cannot accept impurity.

Therefore, mind and desire, when they are brought near to Allah will scream in fear and pain because the experience of God's Presence is torture to them.

Allah does not punish, but the experience of the lives which live in darkness is pain and suffering when the bright light of day shines forth and there is no longer places in which to hide unseen and to continue to conduct themselves as they have done in the darkness.  There is no longer food for them to eat, and so they feel that Allah has starved them; there is no longer freedom to act as they have when they knew not the Presence of God, and so they feel as though they are chained and in prison.  Each bad quality is like a scorpion which stings every time they would turn back to the ways of the world and away from the Qualities of God.

Everything they thought good to eat and drink becomes like boiling lava in their mouth and to their lives.

Please understand this, my children.  This is hell and the awareness of hell is experienced most profoundly by those who are closest to Allah as a blessing, so that they will not turn from Him but will remain in surrender, nearness, and unity with Him within their own hearts.

For those who care nothing about God, what people of God recognize as hell, they regard as heaven, and this is why we have said that to a worm in a dungheap, the dungheap is experienced as heaven.  Do you understand?

Now Allah has given everything into the heart of Insan, has He not? There is no secret of Creation that exists outside of the life of Insan and the Children of Insan.

Therefore, whatever you seek to understand, the understanding must come from within the Wisdom of Insan, which is the Wisdom of Muhaiyaddeen (Ral.), who is the Living Presence of Allah within the Life of Insan. He is al-Haiyy al-haiyy and even when He appears distant from your heart, in Reality He is not.

Your life is the fruit of His Life as His Life is the sweetness of your life.

Therefore, My Sons, it is our prayer that He be recognized and trusted as the very Life of life, not only yours, but also your brothers and sisters, both those you know and recognize and those you do not know and recognize.

May Allah be your trustee, My Sons, just as your Father's Love and Present Wisdom within your life is the promise and seal of Allah's Reality and Truth, not only for your lives, but for the lives of all who love Him and love His Beautiful Qualities.

May we accept Him as our Trustee and as the Proprietor of the wealth of Wisdom and Truth which He has entrusted to us.

May we accept Him as the One who calls all lives to Him through His Mercy and His Compassion, so that even those lives which appear to live in separation from Him can come to know that this separation itself is granted as a blessing from the One who has no separation, but who grants to each life the fulfillment they seek in the form in which they seek it

Even hell is a mercy to those who long for hell, and this is why in Truth there is no separation from the One who is Real and is the Source of all blessing. This is why we have said that to a worm in a dongheap, that dungheap is heaven. Please consider this, my sons.

Our prayer for you, as for all of our children, is that as hearts turn in trust and gratitude to the One who provides whatever is asked for, they will discover that, as their trust and gratitude grow stronger, the torture and suffering of hell will slowly decrease and disappear until there is no longer even the appearance of separation from Him.

This (salvation) will happen for those who seek to dwell in His Presence in love for and unity with Him and His Qualities and His Wisdom. This is the Compassion of Allah, my sons, that there shall be an end to the suffering of all lives, that the suffering born of separation shall be an end to the suffering of all lives, and the suffering born of separation shall be eased and comfort shall be given and received.

This is also the compassion of Insan and the children of Insan, that they shall be the vessels of Divine Compassion, the remembrance of His Compassion, comforting all lives as their Own.

This, my sons, is your Compassion as well, when what is yours is given in trust to Him and when He then entrusts what is His into your trust. This is the station of the son within the Father and the Father within the son; it is the station of the one who trusts in Allah, the Mutawwakil within Ya Wakil, the Trustee, and the station of Ya Wakil within the one who trusts in Him alone; it is the station of the one who loves Allah within His Beloved and of the Beloved within His lover. It is the station of the One within One, the station of Tawhid, of seeking Allah's Unity, His Wahid, wherever he looks. It is the station of Omnipresence of Truth, of Love, of Unity, of Light, of Wisdom. It is the station of La ilaha illa'llah, "Nothing other than God, only God.

My Children, please I am beseeching you to understand this and to live according to this understanding, this Love, this Truth and this Unity.

Now, you ask about the secret in the fear of God. Those who believe in what is other than God will say that He has fear of separation between Himself and His beloved, Insan, who is His own created mystery and that He has sent 124,000 prophets and awliya and aqtab (qutbs) in order to overcome this separation.

They think that God is One and man is one and that the relationship between them is as the relationship between a worldly king and one he rules. But it is not like this, my sons.

This fear of separation is not God's my son, and it is not man's either, though man experiences it as his for a time. Fear itself is born of separation and Allah is One without fear and without separation.

He (God) has created Insan as His Mystery and established Himself as the Mystery of Insan. Allah Himself is the Sirr of Insan, and Insan is the Sirr of Allah. This Sirr experiences Itself as One, and as One it is without fear. It is this Sirr within Insan that is the Treasure of the Life of Man.

But this is a mysterious Treasure because it is hidden from Itself within the Life of Man, seeking to know Itself. It is the One who does not yet know Himself, who say, "I am a Hidden Treasure and love to be known." It is man in the state of God "before" He knows Himself, before the Nur arises from within and separates off from the darkness to reveal God to Himself; before the Qutbiyyat arises from within the Nur and separates out and provides the Explanation of the Divine Separation and the Divine Unity, the explanation that the Grace of this Divine Separation is the Grace of Return to Divine Unity.

Therefore, what man in his ignorance experiences as fear, is in reality, Allah's longing to return to the station, first of "Love to be Known", and from thence, to "Known" and from thence to "Knowing/Known". This Longing for return is the Love of Allah for His own Reality.

This, my sons, my daughters and all my children, is the Truth from the station of Unity within separation and separation within Unity, the station of Tawakkal-Allah. From the station of separation which yet knows not its Original Unity, this fear is that the appearance of separation has greater reality then Unity, that the One who Lives is condemned to perpetual separation from the One who is Beloved. In this station of separation, all that appears as separation is experienced as punishment, as a penalty for being separate.

A New Question

Bawangal, is this connected to what you have said in "Guru Mani", that "When Allahuta'ala created the Arsh, the Arsh became arrogant, so God taught it a lesson through a snake with 70,000 wings ... .

The Answer
to the New Question

It is like this, My Son: the Arsh when it was created became the mind which believed it was separated from God and that it had been created as the Highest. It forgot that It was created as the Seat of the Highest because it thought itself separate from what was above it and what was below it.

But it was the thought itself, the belief itself which caused separation: It was the thought, "I am here, so God is not." This thought became its own punishment, the punishment of the feeling of separation and of the awareness of separation born from that feeling and of the illusory intelligence born from that feeling and that awareness, which then attempted to make itself the seat of judgment, and use its wisdom to prove to itself that it existed as the Highest.

This is how the arrogance of science, of vignanam, arises. It seeks to prove the reality of separation and independence through its own ignorance of the One who created the Arsh, and the purpose for which it was created. In this state of separation, every thought of "I am great" becomes a snake that overshadows the original arrogance of the Arsh itself, and that thought grows so many other thoughts and ideas and illusory forms, each of which appears to have its own reality and its own thoughts about its reality and the reality and thoughts of others.

Because all these originated in the original One's creation and each believed itself to be the Highest, Allah accepted their behaviors and languages as forms of devotion and worship, within the Divine Embrace of His Unity, just as He accepts the 3 turns of the dog before he lies down to sleep, as the dog's remembrance of Him, and the early morning cries of the birds as the bird's praise and prayer to Him.

The extent to which this snake overshadows the Arsh and the extent of Allah's Mercy and Compassion chastened the Arsh, subdued its pride, and caused it to experience shame, which was the experience of its humility as it remembers Allah and opens itself into His Service.

There is, however, a secret to this snake as well, My children, for when one lives in remembrance of Allah, when the breath of the remembrance of al-Haqq is taken within, the illusions born of "I am great" are burned away, and the snake of poisonous illusion becomes the King Cobra, whose poison becomes the most precious Gem in the Universes, the Jeweled Light of Nur-Allah, which is the Jeweled Light of Maha Gnanam.

This is the transformation of what appears separate into what is One without separation; it is the completion of the return of Allah's Sirr into its Original Station of Radiant Luminous Wisdom, Nur Muhammad. Then the King Cobra's body becomes the back of the Throne and its hood becomes Its Canopy, as Nur Muhammad sits upon the Throne and takes His rightful place as King Muhammad.

My Sons, heart of your Father's Heart, Jeweled-Light of My Eye, there is only One and that One is whom we call Allah.

He is without fear because He is without separation, and He seeks nothing for Himself.

Yet because there is only One, in Truth, we may also say that fear arises within Him in the form of the illusion of creation's separation.

He who is One has no fear of right and wrong, praise and blame, heaven and hell, nearness and distance, birth and death, high and low, truth and falsehood, because there is nothing other than He.

He is the Original One, the Original and only I.

Yet in His Mysterious awakening to knowledge of Himself, He has separated wakefulness from sleep, Wisdom from ignorance, Light from dark, and that which has been separated as darkness calls itself I, both in remembrance of the Original One/I and in remembrance of the Eye of Wisdom which sees only that Original One/I.

It is this Eye which sees Its own Vision when the I-thought comes to think it sees God in separation from Himself, and comes to think of Him as Other. In reality, however, there is only the Self, or Ruh, the One/I which is Truth and exists as One, inseparable and indistinguishable and in completion as Allahuta'ala.

This Creation is like a hall of mirrors, each reflecting the One while believing that it Itself is unique in holding the "true" reflection of the One. What man experiences of fear is as if the mirrors believe they were each different and unique in their reflection and in their ability to reflect.

Thus, this Father is reflected in each of His Children's faces and hearts, yet each thinks he or she is purest and truest and highest and wisest so long as they remain in separation. They compare themselves each to the other, when the only Reality they hold within is the One who is reflected.

As long as their attachments is to their uniqueness, they also experience the fear of loneliness and isolation; the fear that they might be required to dwell in the Original Station of Allah's Aloneness.

What each wants most is companionship -- as Allah established "Companions" for Himself, when He awoke to the Nur and caused it to separate out of the darkness, and then caused the Qutb to awake to the Nur.

As Insan, each experiences the fear of doing wrong before the One, in the belief that wrong-doing is the source of separation and isolation from the Companionship of Allah.

As Allah, the One, what Insan experiences as fear, is know as the Love of His Own Reality and His Own Attributes, and there is no fear of wrong-doing because there is no separation, and both "fear" and "wrong-doing" are recognized as illusion.

Know however, that this is not an event which happened in the distant past, but an ever-unfolding Reality through which Allah knows Himself, first in establishing the Companionship of separation within Himself and then in establishing the Unity of His own Nature, like the opening and closing of a Rose Flower in the Light and the dark, like the heart as it pumps the blood of Life throughout the form of His own Mystery.

My Children, we are separate that we might know His Unity through Companionship; and we are as One that we might be grateful for the Mystery of variety and multiplicity of creation through which we remember Him and return to our original station, which is the Original Oneness of Allah. This is living, My Children, and it is dying before death and becoming reborn to the Living Presence of al-Haiyy, which is Mu-Haiyy-ad-deen.

If you like, you may also say that fear is the trembling which Allah experiences in the guise of His separation from Himself as One; it is Allah in the station of forgetfulness of His True Nature, wherein He comes to believe that He is not Himself, but is separated and divided into ego-self. This is another means of saying that Allah yearns to be known by Himself who is the true and only Knower.

Shari'a! My Children, in truth there is no end to the explanations which can be given for this question. Therefore, let us stop for a little while. Meechum anbu.

My love you, My Sons and daughters. Please reflect carefully on what we have written and know that it is not the one who holds the pen who writes but the One who holds the life of the pen-holder in His Hand. Each of the lives of this Father's Children is a pen with which We write. This is one of the meanings of "Beni Muhaiyaddeen" and "Awliya Muhaiyaddeen.

Assalaam alaykum. Please extend the Love of this Father unto the lives of all of His Children, both those who are know to you and those who are not yet known to you.
